Blanket Appalachia is a ministry uniting out of town volunteers with local church members to meet the spiritual
and physical needs in the Appalachian communities. This annual weekend event is held in local churches in the multi-state area
in the Appalachian Region. It is usually scheduled in early November, just before the harsh Appalachian winter settles
in over the mountains.
A typical Blanket Appalachia weekend touches the lives of thousands of Appalachian
residents as well as the several hundred volunteers. The weekend begins with a prayer and worship rally Friday night
for both the out of town volunteers and the local church members. Saturday is spent sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ
with those who come for blankets, Bibles, coats, hand made cedar crosses, as well as other winter clothing (socks, mittens,
toboggans), depending on availability and funds.
Although Blanket Appalachia consists of just one weekend,
it requires a year of praying, planning, purchasing, fund raising and transporting of goods into the region in preparation
for this massive event.
